Free spins: from headline number to real value
"100 free spins" sounds generous, and sometimes it is. But the number of spins is only one of five figures that decide what an offer is worth. The others are the stake per spin, the slot's return to player, the wagering on what the spins win and the cap on winnings. This page shows how to combine them into a single value, so you can compare a spin offer with a deposit match or with no bonus at all. It explains how such offers commonly work; Platiin's current spin offers and their terms are on the operator's promotions page (example amounts are in euros; the maths is the same in any currency).
Where free spins come from
- Part of a welcome package — credited with or after a first deposit.
- Without a deposit — usually a small batch with tight caps; see no-deposit bonus.
- Reload and weekly offers — spins on a new release for a qualifying deposit.
- Loyalty rewards and tournaments — prizes in the form of spins.
The five figures to find
| Figure | Where it is | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Stake per spin | Offer terms or the game screen | Sets the face value of the spins |
| Eligible slot(s) | Offer terms | Each slot has its own RTP and variance |
| Wagering on winnings | Offer terms | Turns spin winnings into a new requirement |
| Max win / cashout | Offer or general terms | Removes anything above the cap |
| Expiry | Offer terms | Unused spins and unfinished wagering lapse |
Worked example: 50 spins at €0.20
Face value: 50 × €0.20 = €10 of play. On a slot with an assumed 96% RTP, the spins return about €9.60 on average. If those winnings are credited as bonus money with a 25x requirement, you must stake €240 before they become cash, and at a 4% edge that costs about €9.60 on average — almost the entire expected win.
| Version of the offer | Expected value |
|---|---|
| Winnings paid as real money, no wagering | about €9.60 |
| Winnings wagered 10 times | about €5.76 |
| Winnings wagered 25 times | close to €0 |
| Wagered 25 times, plus a €20 cap | close to €0, with the rare big win also cut |
Worked example — not a Platiin term. RTP and multipliers are assumptions; averages ignore the chance of running out of balance before finishing.
The lesson: wager-free spins at a modest number are often worth more than a large batch with heavy wagering. The general method is on wagering requirements.
Eligible slots matter
Spins are tied to one slot or a short list. Before you start them, open the slot's info panel and note its RTP and how its features work; a slot that pays mostly through rare bonus rounds will give most players a small result from 50 spins and a few players a large one, which the cap may then trim. If you are curious about a slot that is not on the list, play it with real money later — free spins cannot be moved to another game. Our game guides, for example Sweet Samurai or Alien Fruits 3, describe what to check in each info panel without quoting figures we could not verify.
Using spins well
- Check where the spins are credited — they may sit in a separate tab or appear only when you open the slot.
- Play them before they expire; the countdown often starts on crediting, not on first use.
- After the last spin, look at how the winnings were credited: real money or bonus money, and with which requirement.
- If wagering applies, keep stakes under the max bet from the general bonus terms.
- Decide in advance whether you will play through the requirement or simply let a small bonus balance lapse.
