Cashback: the bonus that pays after you lose
Cashback returns a share of what you lost over a period. Unlike a deposit match, it does not add balance before you play; it softens the result after. That changes everything about how to judge it. A match bonus has to be cleared to be worth anything, while cashback paid as real money is simply money back. The two questions that decide its value are how the loss is calculated and whether the payment comes as cash or as bonus money with wagering. This page explains both and shows the difference in a worked example (example amounts are in euros; the maths is the same in any currency). Whether Platiin offers cashback, and at what rate, is shown on the operator's promotions page.
Common forms of cashback
| Form | Period | Typical basis |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly cashback | Monday to Sunday | Net losses of the week |
| Daily cashback | Each calendar day | Net losses of the day |
| Loss cashback on a deposit | One deposit | Deposit lost in full |
| Insurance bonus | One event or session | Stake lost on that event |
| VIP cashback | Per loyalty level | Higher rates at higher levels |
How "net loss" is defined
The formula is usually something like deposits minus withdrawals minus the balance at the end of the period. Some terms also subtract bonuses received, or count only real-money bets, or exclude certain games. Each variation changes the payout. Look for the definition of "net loss" or "eligible losses" in the cashback terms, and for a minimum loss below which nothing is paid and a maximum cashback per period.
Worked example: 10% weekly cashback
During one week you deposit €300, withdraw nothing and end with €40. Net loss is €260, and 10% cashback is €26.
| Payment form | What €26 is worth to you |
|---|---|
| Real money, no wagering | €26, withdrawable |
| Bonus money, wagered 5 times | €130 of stakes, about €5.20 expected cost: roughly €20.80 |
| Bonus money, wagered 20 times | €520 of stakes, about €20.80 expected cost: roughly €5.20 |
Worked example — not a Platiin term. The 4% edge assumes slots with about 96% RTP.
The same "10% cashback" ranges from full value to a small fraction depending on one sentence. Read it before treating cashback as a safety net. The general method is on wagering requirements.
Weekly or daily: which fits
Daily cashback settles each day on its own. If you lose €50 on Tuesday and win €50 on Wednesday, daily cashback pays on Tuesday's loss; weekly cashback pays nothing because the week nets to zero. Daily periods favour players whose results swing between days, weekly periods give a cleaner, often smaller, figure. Neither changes the long-run cost of play — cashback only reduces it by its rate.
Why cashback suits table and live players
Match bonuses often weight table and live games at a fraction of their stakes, which makes them almost useless for players who prefer blackjack or roulette. Cashback usually counts losses on all games, or on a broader set. For these players, cash-paid cashback is often the only offer that genuinely changes the result. Check whether any games are excluded from the loss calculation. Our table games and live casino pages explain the weighting problem.
Cashback is not a reason to keep playing
A rate of 10% means 90% of the loss stays lost. If you find yourself depositing again to "earn" cashback, that is a signal to set a loss limit; see responsible gambling. Other offers to compare are on the bonus overview and VIP.
